Review
“Sam Keen is one of the most creative, profound thinkers of our time. I personally have learned and benefited immensely from his books. He brings to the men's movement a new kind of practical wisdom that should help both men and women.”—John Bradshaw, author of Homecoming“This book taught me things i didn't know, thawed out some feelings that had been frozen, and made me remember things I thought I wanted to forget. The growing men's movement has added a voice and a book that captures the problems of being male and the promises of manhood achieved. I didn't want it to end.”—John Lee, author of The Flying Boy

Talking about the role of Man on postmodern society is a quite rare enterprise. The author did his homework and offers a pretty solid mythological basis for the understanding of Man and different perspectives from diverse authors and cultures. However, the book gets lost between defending a psychological and a spiritual approach. For the first, it lacks research depth and sources. For the latter, it does not have a spiritual tradition background or lineage - so it sounds superficial and opinionated. The book narrative, also, can be confusing and sometimes your interest is lost due to the same subject being repeated again and again. It is a recommended read for those interested in the topic and the author is sincere and competent but, alas, it is not a definitive work.
Although the reader must be aware that it's not a "how-to manual", but yet another piece of the puzzle that explore the ideals of manhood in our modern culture, trying to answer the question: how to be a man in the modern world; it's one of the best books on manhood that I ever read.
a bit dated but every man should read this, and every woman who is in a relationship with a man should read this too. It helps illuminate why men think and act as they do, and why most don't even realize it.
Terrific, terrific book. Should be read by every male out there, and any female wanting to understand the men in their lives on a deeper level. Get this for yourself, for your son, for your brother, etc.
Of all of the "new age" 1970s "public philosophers," Keen is the most outstanding in terms of his insights and "no BS" approach to personal development issues. He makes you think and feel.
this is the second time i've owned this book as my first copy wore out. while of course 'being a man' is a pretty subjective recommendation based on one's personal experiences, the book does provide some insight into gender differences that are worth contemplating and some overarching worthwhile societal goals to strive for irrespective of gender

I'm actually writing this first version of my review while still reading the book. Not all ideas Sam Keen conveys are original but the presentation as a whole has been somewhat of an empiphany for me. That is to say, it has given me jarringly lucid insight into who I am as a male and the very predictable patterns I, and many other men fall into. While reading the first five chapters, I was struck at how well I was described.I am glad Sam Keen had the courage to write on such a controversial yet worthy topic. All men need to read this book and reflect on their female relationships: mother, partner, children, co-workers and friends alike.I'm not yet sure that simply the awareness of my male tendancies relative to WOMAN will be a solution to faulty relating, but it is certainly a start. Understanding and acting in a less "programmed" manner would be a worthy goal for men who read this book.Keen's acknowledgement that although we are all human beings, we are profoundly different in our historical roles, cultural roles, socialization, and (naturally) in our physiology, is a simple yet profound truth that needs to be carried in the front our awareness while interacting with the opposite sex. This is a vital book for men (and women too) in this age of painful gender division and misunderstanding.
