As a fan of Woody Allen movies I was excited to get my hands on his written work for the first time. Unfortunately his humor that I enjoyed on film did not transfer over to his written work. Through the entire book I caught myself chuckling once maybe twice at the most during his essay on Hitler's Barber. Otherwise I finished this book with a frown and a huge question mark looming over my head. I do believe Woody was making an attempt to be funny in this book but he didn't come through for me. The "humor" was so dry it was brittle like a bread crumb that had been sitting out all night. Maybe old old schoolers will get it.If you want a fun book to read that will make you laugh maybe try Larry David or David Brenner ?

Enjoyed reading many of Woody Allen's funny comments about his movies, and the movie stars he worked with. As a new Yorker I can relate to his superstitions, and his observations, of how couples. build themselves up, before tearing each other apart, when dating, often leading to marriage, and then the routine, starts again........

This is a first collection of Woody Allen's early articles that appeared in various New York publications in the 1960's. They are hit and miss, but mostly hits. A Woody Allen movie fan will recognize his parodies of intellectual pretension and his continuing obsessions with death, metaphysics, and religion.Allen is a master of parody. The pseudo-intellectual silliness in the review of "The Metterling Lists" and the life of the Earl of Sandwich in "Yes, But Can the Steam Engine Do This?" are laugh-out-loud hysterical. "Conversations with Hemholz" is a lesser light about one of the alleged founders of psychoanalysis and the petty rivalries that tickle the funny bone. "Schmeed's Memoirs" about the top Nazi barber is a miss.The "Hassidic Tales" are also top-rate Allen on display. The interpretations of rabbinical misfits by his "noted scholar" are wonderfully absurd justifications for equally absurd behavior. His "Death Knocks" is a weak first encounter with one of his most famous and laughable fears.The other pieces in the collection from chess-by-mail to encounters with Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas all have their moments. One can foresee the germination of "Bananas" in "Viva Vargas" and "Play it Again, Sam" in "Mr. Big." Curiously, in this volume sex takes a holiday since there are no pieces on his second greatest obsession next to death.If you are an Allen fan this small volume is well worth buying at the price for which it is now selling. This was fairly short but very entertaining read. It is the usually quick-witted and quercky early Woody Allen most people know and appreciate. It is a collection of short stories, unrelated in topic. He loves absurd references and off the wall comparisions and they make for a few laugh out loud moments. I recommend this book to anyone who likes off-the-wall writing and comedy with some intellectualism thrown in to the mix. This is early Allen, written before many of his biggest movies came out also.

Woody as been one of my favorite comedians as a standup, a movie maker and raconteur. I feel this book would be hilarious if the Woodman was reading it to me in person. I've read Camille Styles' blog for years now (back when it was first "Style Notes"). I love how the website evolved and continued to improve over time with fresh ideas and content, and different voices contributing to a variety of series. Naturally, I was excited about the book. My first impressions - the layout and photographs are beautiful, and the writing is easy to follow.When the author was promoting the book on a video, she described it as "original content that has never been seen before" - while some of the ideas are innovative (e.g., setting a fall table in shades of amethyst and ivy, which are not your typical fall shades, but it works - I would have liked to see more ideas like this), some of the tips are common sense (e.g., toasting nuts before using, cleaning up the guest room!). I wish she could have extended on her ideas by providing step-by-step pictures to go along with the tips on floral arrangements, for example, like the use of chicken wire and floral tape that she mentions on p. 30. It's not that the instructions aren't described clearly, but visuals do help; these could have easily taken the place of the many pictures of the author and/or her child (who in fairness is adorable). This could have made the chapters more "meaty", considering that many of the chapters are just 3-4 pages long.I found some of the information unnecessary, e.g. the chapters ("chapters" meaning 1-2 pages) devoted to "connecting with all the senses to usher in each season", which, for lack of better words, are your typical seasonal cliches. As the author uses the seasons as an organizer for the book, perhaps bulleted lists of produce, foliage, or flowers that are typical for the season would be helpful for the reader to know what to look out for during that season (though I understand some might be obvious, others may not be).I didn't quite care for the makeup and style tips much (again, some are common sense, e.g., dressing comfortably, planning outfit in advance); I suppose that is just my personal preference as I am more focused on the food and things going smoothly when entertaining.I like the different "themes" for parties with menus already thought out. The recipes are fairly straightforward, and a number of them also add a little twist to everyday staples using less-common ingredients. Some examples are the chicken with a dipping sauce of yogurt and harissa, popcorn with ras el hanout - both of which are spices/condiments I enjoy using and experimenting with. Other new-to-me combinations are the thyme popovers with ginger-pear butter, fennel in marinated olives (not my usual go-to spice), and the addition of green apple in tabbouleh, for example. Her salad combinations seem to be her strength.The storytelling adds a personal touch and gives the reader more insight into the author's point of view and life experiences (the story about the burnt turkey and plumbing problem on Thanksgiving dinner was unforgettable). The writing is mostly enjoyable but perhaps the editor could have caught on to the overuse of some words such as "brimming", i.e., "CSA box brimming with produce" - this may be a little nitpicky but I do a lot of writing and proofreading for my job, and after reading the book cover to cover in one sitting, it tends to sound repetitive.I also would have liked to see more "practical" tips from her experience in event planning/catering and translated these into the context of entertaining at home. For example, one of her appetizer recipes requires endive leaves as a "holder" for figs and blue cheese because they hold up well at room temperature. As another example, she laid out a Thanksgiving prep timeline in one of her chapters; it would have been nice to see similar tips in her other themed celebrations for consistency - these can be helpful for the entertainer who tends to prepare by himself or herself and isn't adept at multi-tasking. I understand this may go against the whole "low-key" and "effortless" entertaining premise of the book, but it has to be said that there IS effort and thoughtful preparation that goes into making gatherings APPEAR effortless!I do appreciate how she gave credit to each individual who contributed to the book - various persons/companies are credited within the chapters and not just at the end, which appears to demonstrate the collaborative effort towards the book. I will admit that it's not the first book I reach for when I want to try a new recipe, but I kept the book more for inspiration. Overall, the book is visually beautiful, many of the recipes and other content are interesting and engaging enough, but there is some room for improvement.

One or two decent recipes and hints, but the author makes Gwyneth Paltrow seem down-to-earth. Guess I'm just too plebeian for this type of lifestyle.

I am new to the world of Greg Fitzsimmons having learned of him from listening to Adam Corolla's podcast and then discovering Greg's this past Fall. I read "Dear Mrs. Fitzsimmons" on a recent vacation and found the book surprisingly engaging and moving. Greg is a proud Irishman, as am I, and he is also about my age, so I was eager to hear what his experience in life had been like so far. My mom always told me that as an Irish person I would never be happy. I find her words haunt me and I wonder if other Irish people suffer from this same inability to truly be happy. Greg seems like he struggled a lot to find his present happiness and it was a joy to watch him mature from an overly cocky but insecure young man into a man who gave up drinking and drugs because he wanted to be in charge of himself and the best he could be as a comedian. The book is also a bit of a love letter to his famous, deceased father who loomed large in Greg's young life and could never quite control his own demons. A good read.

Greg Fitzsimmons manages to be hilarious (as always) while opening up about deeply personal matters. I am a huge fan so my opinion may be slightly biased, but I can’t imagine anyone not enjoying Dear Mrs Fitzsimmons. Eagerly awaiting volume 2, now that the kids are older and he faces and overcomes new challenges, personal and professional. Grab the pen Fitzdog...but don’t reduce frequency of either of your podcasts. I am dangerously reliant on them.

Hilarious. I loved it. It's a great book because it is real. Real stories that are real funny. What a better way to feel better about yourself and your failings than to make fun of some one else's problem childhood. This is a way to find out what would have happened if you had made all those decisions that you are glad that you didn't. It's also a way to validate that many of those things that "adults" tell you when you are kid, really have no impact on the person that you end up being as an adult. It is seriously an enjoyable read. Thanks.

I thought this would be light fare, but in fact the book reflects the author's great depth and insight into family life, alcoholism, and his father. He grew up in relative comfort but not all was comfortable inside. Not lost in the storytelling, however, is the author's unique gifts of wit, which has drawn many of us in over the years and continues to do so. Whether you want to cry or laugh, this will not disappoint.

Comedians can be all over the place when they write books despite the fact writing is essentially what the do for a living. Fortunately, Greg Fitzsimmons delivers with this book filled with anecdotes about his life.An easy read the kept me interested from cover to cover. I really hope Fitzsimmons finds the opportunity to write another book.

I got turned on to Greg through his twice a week podcast on itunes. His sense of humor hit home with me so i knew the book would find a home on my shelf. Greg's writing is at the same time poignant and hilarious, not something easily accomplished. Listening to the Fitzdog Radio podcast on itunes, i was well aware of Greg's prowess as a comedian, but once i delved into the book i was pleasantly surprised to find his writing top notch. Listening to the podcast, you would think hes a comedian who wrote a book, but reading the book you'd think he was an author who also does comedy. Which i hope sounds like the compliment i meant it to be. Thanks Greg for a great podcast and a better book.

i found this book to be very helpful and educational. i appreciated the way it was organized and laid everything out in plain language which was easy for me to understand. there were some topics which weren't elaborated on as much as i would have liked, but at least they gave me a direction to research online. but for the most part, everything was explained well enough that i didn't need to research it further. i especially appreciate that it included portions on combating infertility, which was a great concern of mine.

This book has a lot of information, in an easy to read format. I read through it quickly. The information isn't necessarily in other books, or it gives a different perspective than my other books about endo.It's a great read. Very helpful. I have used it as a reference since reading it. It's staying on my bookshelf for life.-Liz

Very informative for those of us who are trying to make decisions as to what kind of operation I might need. I felt like it breaks it down really well without being too wordy and losing my interest in fact listing.

Endo is a very confusing disease. This really helped me understand what my body was doing, and how to cope with it. I would reccomend this book to anyone that has Endometriosis. Get a highlighter & flip thru it. You will come back to those highlighted spots.

This is the 4th book I've bought on the subject, hoping for a miracle, I guess. This is a very informative book, but some of the info is a bit dated now.
